Official Play Rules
Version 5.0 | Effective: September 2026
1. Competition Overview
What's Up Trivia is a skill-based knowledge competition platform. Players answer multiple-choice questions to earn sponsored leaderboard rewards, and outcomes depend entirely on knowledge and quick thinking, not chance. This is a competitive quiz platform, not a gambling product.
There are four ways to play:
- Practice Mode — free, unlimited, no rewards
- Classic Mode — 15 questions and a reward ladder to ₦50,000
- Tournaments — sponsored events with a prize pool paid by final rank
- Challenge-A-Friend(s) — you set up a match against people you invite (section 7)
2. Eligibility
- All modes: Users aged 13 and above
- Sponsoring a challenge prize: Users aged 18 and above
- Must have a valid Nigerian bank account to claim prizes won (for now)
- One account per person (strictly enforced)
- Must provide accurate registration information
3. Competition Format
3.1 Questions
- 15 questions per round
- Multiple choice with 4 options (A, B, C, D)
- In Classic Mode and tournaments, questions increase in difficulty as you progress
- Questions are drawn from our question bank; categories include General Knowledge, History, Science, Geography, Sports, Entertainment and more
3.2 Timer
- 12 seconds per question is the default
- Timers are progressive: as questions get harder, the time allowed shortens
- Timers can change from question to question and round to round, and may differ between modes and platforms. The time for each question is always shown with it
- Challenges use 10 seconds per question
- Timer starts when the question is displayed
- No extensions are granted for any reason
- A timeout counts as a wrong answer
3.3 Answering
- On the web, tap your answer. In chat, reply A, B, C or D
- The first valid answer is recorded
- An answer cannot be changed once submitted
4. Reward Structure (Classic Mode)
4.1 Reward Tiers
Sponsored rewards follow a tier ladder. Each correct answer moves you up one tier:
| Question | Reward Tier | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | ₦200 | |
| Q2 | ₦250 | |
| Q3 | ₦300 | |
| Q4 | ₦500 | |
| Q5 | ₦1,000 | 🔒 MILESTONE |
| Q6 | ₦2,000 | |
| Q7 | ₦3,000 | |
| Q8 | ₦5,000 | |
| Q9 | ₦8,000 | |
| Q10 | ₦10,000 | 🔒 MILESTONE |
| Q11 | ₦20,000 | |
| Q12 | ₦25,000 | |
| Q13 | ₦30,000 | |
| Q14 | ₦40,000 | |
| Q15 | ₦50,000 | 🏆 TOP TIER |
4.2 Milestone Tiers
- Q5 (₦1,000) and Q10 (₦10,000) are milestone tiers
- A wrong answer or a timeout after Q5 but before Q10 pays ₦1,000
- A wrong answer or a timeout after Q10 pays ₦10,000
- A wrong answer or a timeout before Q5 pays nothing
4.3 How a Round Is Settled
Only milestone amounts are paid when a round ends early. In addition:
- Quitting a round on the web forfeits everything from that round, including any milestone already passed
- Failing a security check (CAPTCHA, photo verification or any other) during a round ends it and pays nothing
- If a question cannot be delivered to you because of a technical failure: at the first question the round is cancelled and your credit or token is returned; from the second question onwards the round ends and pays nothing, and nothing is refunded automatically. Contact us and we will review it; any refund is at our discretion
4.4 Reward Limits
- Daily maximum: ₦30,000 in Classic winnings per user per day
- Top tier cooldown: 5 days after earning the ₦50,000 top tier, during which Classic Mode and tournaments are unavailable
- Challenge games are not affected by the daily maximum or the cooldown. Practice Mode is always available
5. Lifelines
5.1 50:50
- Tap 50:50 on the web, or type "50" or "5050" in chat
- Removes 2 incorrect answers, leaving the correct answer and one other
- Adds 5 seconds to the question you use it on
- Once per round
5.2 Skip
- Tap Skip on the web, or type "SKIP" in chat
- The current question is replaced with a new one at the same difficulty
- Once per round, in Classic Mode and tournaments. Skip is not available in challenges, where everyone must answer the same question
6. Tournaments
- Tournaments are sponsored events with a prize pool announced in advance
- Entry uses a tournament token or access credit, as stated for each tournament. Promo codes can be applied at the entry confirmation step where one is offered
- You are ranked by the number of questions you reach in your best round; where two players reach the same question, the faster total time ranks higher
- Prizes are paid by final rank, according to the prize structure published for that tournament
- Quitting a round, or failing a security check (CAPTCHA, photo verification or any other), pays nothing for that round. The questions you reached still count towards your rank
7. Challenge-A-Friend(s)
7.1 What a Challenge Is
A challenge is a match you set up and share with people you choose. Everyone answers the same 15 questions from the categories you pick, with 10 seconds per question. The highest score wins; if scores are level, the lowest total answer time wins.
7.2 Two Ways to Play
- Anytime: each player plays their round whenever suits them within the time allowed. Available on web, WhatsApp and Telegram
- Live: everyone plays at the same moment, question by question, at a start time you set. Live challenges are played in the browser; players on WhatsApp and Telegram receive a link to join
7.3 Players and Timing
- A challenge can be one-on-one or a group of up to 20 players
- An invitation stays open for 48 hours. In an anytime challenge, each player has 24 hours from accepting to play their round
- For a live challenge, the lobby opens 5 minutes before the start time. The creator may extend the start by 5 minutes up to twice if players are missing
- A live challenge that starts without the creator, or where the creator does not respond, begins automatically at the start time
- Late entry is not possible once a live challenge has started
- The creator can cancel a challenge until someone joins
7.4 Completing a Challenge
- A challenge counts as complete only when at least two different players have finished it
- A live challenge with fewer than two players present at the start is called off
- Every player, including the winner, receives a result card showing the final standings
7.5 Cost
- Joining a challenge never uses an access credit
- Depending on how the platform is currently configured, the creator may pay a setup charge based on the number of players. Any charge is shown before payment
- The creator may add a sponsored prize of ₦1,000 to ₦100,000 for the winner. A sponsored prize carries a platform fee of 15% of the prize. The prize, the fee and any setup charge are paid together, upfront
- The creator must be 18 or older to sponsor a prize
7.6 Sponsored Prizes
- The winner receives the prize amount only. The setup charge and platform fee are kept by the platform
- The creator may win their own sponsored prize if they win the challenge, and is paid like any other winner
- Prizes are claimed in the same way as other rewards (section 9), within 72 hours
- A result that shows signs of collusion is held for review before any prize is paid
7.7 If a Challenge Does Not Complete
- If a sponsored challenge is cancelled, expires or is called off, the prize is refunded in full to the creator
- The setup charge and platform fee are not refunded
- Refunds are claimed in the same way as rewards, where applicable, or processed manually after verification
8. Access Credit System
- Classic Mode uses 1 access credit per round
- Access credits are bought through secure payment processing. Current packages and prices are shown in the app at the time of purchase
- Access credits never expire
- Access credits are non-refundable, non-transferable, and have no monetary value outside the platform
- Access credits grant participation only; they are not stored value or convertible currency
9. Reward Redemption
- Type "CLAIM" in chat, or tap the claim button on the web, to start processing a reward
- Provide valid Nigerian bank account details; the account name must match your registered name
- Rewards must be claimed within 72 hours of being earned. Unclaimed rewards after 72 hours are forfeited
- If you have more than one reward waiting, they are claimed one at a time
- Processing is completed within 12–24 business hours
- KYC verification is required for amounts over ₦10,000
10. Fair Competition & Prohibited Conduct
The following are STRICTLY PROHIBITED and may result in a permanent ban:
- Creating or using multiple accounts
- Using bots, scripts, or automation tools
- Using external resources during timed rounds (search engines, AI assistants, etc.)
- Copying or harvesting question text
- Screen sharing or receiving external assistance
- Sharing accounts or having others play on your behalf
- Colluding with other players, including arranging the outcome of a challenge, passing answers to another player, or entering a challenge with accounts you control
- Exploiting bugs or system vulnerabilities
- Using stolen payment methods
- Providing false information
11. Integrity Measures
11.1 Turbo Mode
If our systems detect answering behaviour that suggests outside help or automation, Turbo Mode may activate for part of a round. The time allowed per question is shortened, and you may be asked to type "GO" to continue. Failing to respond ends the round. Turbo Mode is applied automatically and is not a penalty on its own; it exists to raise the tempo, test players and make the game more fun, while ensuring fair play for all.
11.2 Photo Verification
During a round you may be asked to take a quick photo to confirm that you are the person playing. Failing this, or any other security check, ends the round and pays nothing (section 4.3).
11.3 Other Measures
- CAPTCHA verification during rounds
- Device fingerprinting and tracking
- Behavioural analysis and pattern detection
- Response time monitoring
- On the web, a Classic round can be played on one device at a time
- KYC identity verification
- Timing out at the first question three times in a row leads to a temporary suspension from reward modes, followed by a probation period with shorter timers. A warning is given after the second
12. Disputes
- Round sessions are logged for 7 days
- Web players can review their own recent games, question by question, for 72 hours
- Disputes must be raised within 7 days of the round
- Valid disputes may result in access credit refunds
- All decisions by our team are final
13. Modifications
We reserve the right to modify these rules at any time. Continued participation constitutes acceptance of updated rules.
